Stockman Encourages Human Rights in China on 25th Tiananmen Anniversary

Statement

Date: June 4, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Stockman issued the following statement on the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

"Today, people around the world proudly remember the throngs of brave Chinese people who peacefully demonstrated for freedom 25 years ago, and bow their heads in silence for those who were massacred or imprisoned during the historic demonstrations and throughout the years since.

"On this tragic anniversary, I encourage the Chinese people to learn more about every man and women's fundamental human rights, as well as the real history of Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.

"I applaud all Chinese who continue to work for the right to freedom of speech and freedom of speech on the internet, freedom of religion, free and fair elections for the leaders and parties of their choice, and true justice.

"The greatest strengths you have are in your courage and in your numbers which are far greater than the membership of the Chinese Communist Party.

"I want you to know that you have a great many friends in the United States, and by working together, we can make tremendous gains in human rights, and perhaps the next anniversary of the massacre can be a celebration of freedom, rather than a somber commemoration of that time of fear and mass arrests."
